Listening Test Overview

The Listening section of the IELTS exam consists of 4 sections with 40 questions in total. You will have approximately 30 minutes to complete the exam, plus an additional 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.

Structure of the Exam

Recording 1   A conversation between two people set in an everyday social context.

Recording 2   A monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local facilities.

Recording 3   A conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment.

Recording 4   A monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture.


General Strategies

  1. Familiarize yourself with the test format: Before taking the test, make sure you are familiar with the test format. The IELTS Listening section consists of 4 parts, each with 10 questions. You will have 30 minutes to complete the entire section.
